Living in a joint-family and its Pros and Cons

I’ve been living in a joint family my whole life and that is my normal. I can’t say much on what would it be like to NOT live in one, but when I go to my friends’ houses I get a peek into the other world so I hope to give you a fair view.

In my house, along with me live my:

-         Great-Grandfather (101)

-         Grandfather (77)

-         Grandmother (70)

-         Uncle (48)

-         Aunt (48)

-         Older cousin (22)

-         Younger cousin (18)

-         Dad (47)

-         Mom (48)

-         Me (12)

So without further due here are the Pros and Cons.

Pros

  •  A Bigger House: with so many people living in our house, it is bigger and since everybody in our house is a sport fanatic, there is space to play almost all sports like a big lawn outside where we play cricket and a Table Tennis table inside. The fact that the house is big means Hide ‘n’ seek is really fun in our house.

  • Frequent Activities: with so many people there are always frequent activities going on. Whether it is a family game of tambola, cards, a quiz or a treasure hunt, something is always going on. Frequent games of table tennis and cricket are also a thing.

  • People to Play with: I, being an only child, have no siblings to play with so playing cards with my aunt and cousins and chess with my grandmother is a way to play with someone when I feel like.

  • Family Holidays: sometimes, our whole family goes on a vacation to someplace in India to just sit back and enjoy or to celebrate an occasion, like last December our family went to Varanasi to celebrate my Grandparents 50th anniversary.

Cons

  • -       Privacy: I guess that is the only Con I can think of. That sometimes, when you need your privacy it can be violated by the fact that there are so many people living in this house. For example; if you are angry with someone because you had a fight and you need your own space, it is a little hard to find.

Since the Pros by far beat the Cons, I say given the opportunity I would choose to live in a joint family.
