Extra book review
Extra
Extra, a book about the difficulties in friendship when you have differences, is a great way to open yourself and be more inclusive. Reading it will make you feel “have I ever done that?” “Is that how the other person felt”? And “Can a few words really
hurt so much”?
Sara is going to meet her cousins for the first time. She’s going to their house which is in a fishing village called Anjor. Her cousins
and she become fast friends, but Sara can’t help noticing that her cousin Shreya is taking much more time in everything they do.
As this trip takes an unexpected turn and becomes and adventure and a mystery, Sara wonders if Shreya is understanding everything they say and if her down syndrome is actually slowing them down. But is it?
As I read this book, a feeling of mixed emotions came to me. I expected to feel sympathetic but the book’s positive tone didn’t allow that. Instead I felt grateful, for everything, and also this book, which has made me a more inclusive person.
